Taiwan market: Privately imported Wii consoles selling at over 70% markup
Since Nintendo has not yet announced a launch date for its Wii game consoles
in Taiwan, profiteers have privately introduced the Japanese-version Wii for
sale in Taiwan through retail channels and on-line shopping platforms for
NT$11,900 (US$367), representing a 71.6% markup of the official price of
25,000 yen in the Japan market, according to retail channels in Taiwan.
The Wii was launched in North America on November 19, where 600,000 of the
consoles were sold in the first eight days, and subsequently launched in
Japan on December 2 and Europe on December 8, according to the sources.
The importing the Japanese-version of the Wii into Taiwan is, strictly
speaking, illegal because only Hakuyu, the Taiwan sales agent for Nintendo,
is licensed to import the game console, accessories and related software, the
sources pointed out. As Nintendo has not yet completed Wii-support platforms
in Taiwan, people in Taiwan who buy the Japanese-version of the Wii will be
unable to enjoy services offered by the game platform's Wii Channel, the
sources indicated.
